Summary

Artist Desiree Sterbini remains grateful for her favorite childhood teacher’s words: “Desiree, if you are afraid to speak your words, then I want you to draw and paint them.”

While she has since overcome her shyness, she continues to strive to communicate through her artwork. Desiree creates portrait and figurative pieces primarily with Sennelier oil pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils on Colourfix paper/board or an archival surface with sandpaper grit. Her favorite subjects include children, women of color, nature, and the simple lives of ordinary people.

After receiving a Fine Arts degree with a concentration in painting from UNC-Greensboro, she initially chose a career as a flight attendant with Piedmont/USAirways Airlines. Eventually, Desiree settled in the DC metro area and returned to art, becoming a resident artist with Artists and Makers Studio in Rockville, MD.

Her oil pastel paintings have been exhibited and featured throughout the DC metro area, including Hill Center Galleries, Strathmore Mansion, Sandy Spring Museum, the National Institutes of Health Fine Art Program, and Children’s National Hospital. Her works have also been on loan in the Port Louis, Mauritius Embassy through the United States Arts in Embassy program. Her works are held in numerous collections, including Iona Senior Services, Marie Reed Health Center, and The Commons at Stanton Square.

Desiree is excited to have joined Arts on the Greenway and Charlotte’s thriving art community. She can often be found in her studio blending rich, creamy oil pastels with rolled paper stumps and her fingers lost in her subject, willing it to speak.
